Although it is documented in the reference manual, the behaviour of ignoring incomplete function prototypes is rather unintuitive, and has lead to confusion where inference appeared to be failing despite an explicit type being given. Additionally, the current permissive syntax makes it rather easy to introduce incomplete prototypes by mistake.

I think it would be helpful if the compiler emitted warnings for incomplete function prototypes, indicating that the information is being ignored.

(Of course, a better solution would be to make use of the information, but I assume there are complications in implementing this.)

We agree with both of your suggestions. Ignoring partial types is not intended, we just haven't gotten around to fix it. I'll see about bumping the priority of at least implementing warnings when a type is being ignored.
